Introduction

Plimmerton Volunteer Fire Brigade will be sending a team of fire-fighters to compete in the SkyTower Challenge on May 19th.

We shall be racing up the Auckland Sky Tower in full firefighting kit to raise funds and awareness for the Leukaemia & Blood Foundation (LBF).

Our target is to riase $5,000 which will all go to this life-saving charity.

Every day 6 children and adults in New Zealand are diagnosed with a blood cancer like leukaemia, lymphoma and myeloma.

The LBF is the national charity dedicated to supporting patients and their families, this support that can last months or even years.

The LBF receives no government funding, so please sponsor me and help me support this great cause.

I work in a building with 16 floors so worked out I need to do 3 and a half times that for the Skytower. Started training properly last week. Did 3 times bottom to top which is a good start. Managed to fit it in 4 times during the week which is good. Next week I am looking to start carrying some weight and to do it 4 times. Found some ankle weights at a garage sale which will help simulate boots, heavy trousers etc. All the sponsorship is a huge motivation for me and the rest of the Brigade.

Did my first training at the weekend in my full kit. It is a killer. The heat is the worst thing as it builds up so quickly in heat-proof clothing ! Carrying the weight is becoming easier. Have not tried any training with the breathing aparatus mask on yet which will add another dimension I am sure.

Thanks to everyone for all of their support. Only one week to go now ! Climbed the Majestic Centre over the weekend twice in full BA which is the largest building in Wellington at 29 floors. Feeling like it is going to be possible now !
