I've started my training to get fit for the big event and I'm discovering where my base fitness is at right now. I guess I realised I could stand to loose a few Kg as I was recently advised, so it's all good!
Fortunately I work in a 12 story building on the 5th floor so I've decided to give the lifts a miss for a while when I can afford the time. NZ Post house has 319 steps if I've counted correctly, so 4 ascents per session should be a close match to the target number.
I've also been training climbing up the steps at the end of Wagon Rd in Stokes Valley which is handy to home. I'm aiming for 5 sets per session as there's almost 250 steps there.
I hit the steps on Sunday in my level 2 PPE fire gear for the first time. That lifts the bar a bit more I'd have to say. It makes it pretty hot work and I'll be hoping for colder weather to train in soon!
We should be getting some spare BA sets to use for training soon.
Did some fundraising in the weekend round at the Kindy during their garage sale and let some of the kids get on the truck. Cheers for all donations.
Did several climbs of NZPH yesterday after a few days of being not terribly active and feeling not too bad surprisingly. Probably hit me tomorrow (as these things usually do) so plan to hit it straight back. Supposed to be crappy weather so a good day for indoor activities I say!
Trying to hook up with Dave and others from Silverstream brigade for a crack at the Majectic tower one weekend but as usual other things are conspiring against me being there. Maybe over Easter I should have a better chance.
Some more steps climbing was done over Easter weekend. Sweet weather for it but warm work.
Went up the Majestic tower steps a couple of times in my level 2 gears for the first time on Sunday arvo. 28 floors/588 steps, man that's a killer. Not a fast acsent compared with others but this old guy got there eventually.
We did some fundraising down at Queensgate, rattling the buckets while we all took turns walking on a treadmill wearing BA. Looks like we collected some good money from donations but we will have to wait and see how much.
Another very successful few hours of treadmill fundraising at Capital on the Quay on Thursday with the support of Lifestyle.
Went up the steps on Saturday afternoon in level 2 gear and with a BA set on my back for the first time. The extra weight slowed the whle thing down and made my knees feel it a bit on the downhill. No long term damage it seems, so I just need to get used to it from now on.
Thanks for all the support so far.
Just a couple of weeks to go now and needing to stepping up the training a bit. Did another 5 sets of the stokes valley steps last weekend with BA on. Had some air in my cylinder so decided to do a couple of climbs breathing from the BAto get a feel for the load on my lungs. Once my head worked out how much or little air I could expect when I really wanted it I started to get into a pace I could sustain. Been keeping up stepping up NZPH during the week and feeling a bit faster and fitter. Need to go harder this weekend with blowing my cork. Not wanting to get an injury this close in. Good to see Shane's heel is finally coming right and he's managed to keep the training going too.
Saturday morning and I'm back up the steps at Stokes Valley again with all the gear on etc. Not feeling overly fast, doing 5 climbs but getting there probably faster than I thought with some minor equipment failure (helmet needs repair). Tomorrow’s another day and I see if I can do more again.
Thanks for your donation Robyn and Peter and everyone from Datacom who have been supportive to me in this mad event.
Sunday started with a slightly sore knee but took the opportunity to have one more crack at the Majestic tower with all the brigade team and one of Dave's mates. I decided to not put BA on my back to reduce the load on my knee but still managed to do three ascents of 28 floors without spitting up blood!
Thanks so much to Laurence from Seasoned & Dressed Caters for letting us use the facilities on the 28th floor and for your kind donation.
